My name is James R. McIlroy

Welcome to my page!

I am a full-time working tattoo and mural artist located in Oneonta, N.Y. since 2010. I’ve owned my own private tattoo and art studio since 2020.

My travels throughout the U. S. and abroad have further inspired my work. I believe in sharing that inspiration with others and have tried my best to contribute to the development of a thriving local arts community.

My artwork has been exhibited numerous times at the Community Arts Network of Oneonta (CANO) gallery, and I have produced vibrant murals throughout the city and surrounding areas.

Memorable mural spots include the Martin-Mullen gallery at SUNY Oneonta, the Ford Sales Building on 27 Market St. in Oneonta, CANO's Wilbur Mansion Studio building, Dazzo’s Restaurant, Hartwick College, The Cortland Corset Factory and Confluence Park in Binghamton.

My mural work is inspired by the diverse and vibrant beauty of the animal kingdom as well as my love for ornamental flourishes. Growing up in the Adirondacks has had a significant influence on my artistic journey, particularly my exposure to local wildlife. I strive to evoke emotions and stimulate contemplation about our relationship with animals and the environment. By bringing large painted versions of these creatures into urban terrain, I hope to foster a connection between the viewers and the subject matter. This, in turn, will hopefully bring conservation to the forefront of their minds.

Whether I’m working on a college campus or outside on a two-story building, I adapt my materials to fit the environment. Acrylic paint applied with a brush is my preferred method, but I also appreciate the way acrylic brushwork interacts with aerosol.

My application of the design to the surface is also influenced by the canvas. I utilize various methods, including freehand, projection, overlay grid systems, or carbon transfer. I strive to ensure quality craftsmanship that can endure in any setting.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you have any mural ideas or leads on any projects, I’m always looking for new prospects! Maybe we can even work together in the future. Cheers!
